What exactly is the difference between 3D and 4D?

We often get asked the question what is the difference between 3D ultrasound and 4D Ultrasound? Its rather simple but lets dig deeper. Traditional ultrasounds done by your doctor are done in 2D or 2 Dimension. This is the black and white imaging that your OBGYN uses. This is what all doctors or imaging studio’s use to take accurate measurements and determine weight and gestational periods.

3D Ultrasound is taking the 2D image and adding a 3rd dimension. This is the colored ultrasound that allows you to see facial images of your baby and see the body shape in real life. 3D ultrasounds do not benefit the doctors in obtaining sizes or gestational periods. They are more for fun and detailed shots. So what exactly is 4D Ultrasound?

4D ultrasounds are just like a 3D Ultrasound but it adds movement or the 4th dimension. Some argue that this isn’t actual 4D. The 4D ultrasound can be also done in HD which adds more depth to the images.
